RAC warns insurers that they cannot depend on motor car black boxes

RAC car insurance is warning insurers not be too dependant on a cars black box or EDR box. These boxes collect data by event through a data recorder, but it does not record all the drivers actions.

This type of box can record the speed and actions of the motor vehicle such as breaking, indicating and acceleration. They also save the last 30 seconds before an event such as an accident and then 15 seconds after the event.

The only problem is that to introduce these EDR boxes will be very expensive to motorists, however the government could help with the costs, if they help to reduce the number of accidents on England’s roads.
